Abstract

This paper explores the potential of comics as a tool for edu-cational mediation. To deconstruct stereotypes and promote a cul-ture of acceptance of otherness, a theoretical reflection is pro-posed on Beastars, the manga by Itagaki (2016- 2020) that delves into the dynamics of social coexistence. Through visual literacy (Eisner, 2021) and narrative pedagogy (Bruner, 1986), it will be highlighted how the language of manga facilitates identification and the development of empathy. The paper opens with an exam-ination of the language of Japanese comics, following the guide-lines of the narratological and semiotic study of the Groensteen model (2011) and the construct of visual metaphors (Blumenberg, 1996). Subsequently, the analysis focuses on the similarities be-tween the illustrated community, divided between carnivores and herbivores, and contemporary reality. The research aims to high-light the value of comics as an innovative educational artefact.
